Accessibility statement for sport.hull.ac.uk

This accessibility statement applies to all pages under the sport.hull.ac.uk domain, excluding those at bookings.sport.hull.ac.uk, and any other subdomains of sport.hull.ac.uk.

This website is run by Student Services at the University of Hull. We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. For example, that means you should be able to:

• Zoom in up to 200% without the text spilling off the screen
• Navigate most of the website using just a keyboard
• Navigate most of the website using speech recognition software
• Listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver)

How accessible this website is

We know some parts of this website are not fully accessible:

• A small number of images are missing alt text, and some images have unhelpful alt text
• IFrames are not titled
• Some PDFs are inaccessible (such as the timetable), due to having no tag-based structure
• Videos used tend to lack captions
• When zooming in past 200%, text starts overlapping and the menu ceases to work
• The site has no ability to skip navigation
• Keyboard focus is often hard to identify
• There are issues with colour contrast across the site
• It’s not possible to pause, stop, or hide automatically moving content
• The site does not have a site map
• The 360 degree tours are not keyboard accessible

Third-party tools

YouTube

We embed YouTube and Vimeo videos on the site. We know there are accessibility issues with this.

The video controls do not have enough contrast. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.4.11 (non-text contrast).

Some video controls have a tooltip which does not stay open when moving the cursor to them. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.4.13 (content on hover or focus).

We don’t have accessible alternatives and, as we don’t control the platform, are unable to make the changes required to improve them.

360player

The site contains a number of 360 degree tours of the facilities available, which are made using a tool called 360player.

They cannot be navigated without the use of a mouse of swipe as there is no alternative button. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 2.5.1 (Pointer Gestures).

We don’t have accessible alternatives and, as we don’t control the platform, are unable to make the changes required to improve them.

Content

IFrames & Images

• Some images may be missing alt text, and Iframes may not have titles. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.1.1 (Non-text Content).

  We are working to check all content to bring it in line with the accessibility standards by the end of 2020.

Text Contrast

• Across the site there are issues with the contrast of text to the background colour. This is most noticeable with the white text on the orange background. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.4.3 (Contrast (Minimum)).

  We are working to check all content to bring it in line with the accessibility standards by the end of 2020.

Automatic Media

• On most pages of the site, typically contained within the header image, there is automatically triggered media, with no controls for the user to pause, stop, or hide this. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 2.2.2 (Pause, Stop, and Hide).

  We are working to include player controls or remove the media by the end of 2020.

PDFs

• There are some PDFs on the site, such as the classes timetable, that are not accessible. This is because they were originally images, and therefore have no tag-based strucute, nor text readable by a screen-reader. We are working to convert these PDFs to a more accessible standard, such as by implementing them as HTML pages. In the meantime, please contact us on the above contact details if you need accessible alternatives. This fails a number of WCAG 2.1 success criterion such as 1.1.1 (Non-text content), 1.3.1 (Info and Relationships), and 1.4.5 (Images of Text).

  We are working to rectify this by the end of 2020.

Navigation

• There is no functionality to provide a skip navigation link. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 2.4.1 (Bypass Blocks).

  We are working to fix this.

• There is currently no site-map or search for pages. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 2.4.5 (Multiple Ways).

  We are investigating ways we can incorporate this.

• Some elements on the site do not show which element currently has keyboard focus. This fails WCAG 2.4.7 (Focus Visible).

  We are working to improve this.

• When zooming in past 200%, elements of the site begin to overlap, and the mobile menu fails to operate correctly. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.4.4 (Resize text) and 1.4.12 (Text Spacing).

  We are working to fix this by the end of 2020.

Disproportionate burden

We know that our third-party hosted forms that we embed into pages are not always accessible, due to missing labels, a lack of autocomplete attributes, and the inability to resize content. Forms also struggle with Input Assistance, Error Identification, a lack of Labels and Instructions, and Error Suggestions.

We believe that fixing the content now would be a disproportionate burden within the meaning of the accessibility regulations, as we are looking to migrate our forms to a new platform within the next year.
Content that’s not within the scope of the accessibility regulations

Some older videos do not have captions, however pre-recorded content published before the 23^rd of September 2020 is not within the scope of the regulations.

What we’re doing to improve accessibility

All new content created on the platform undergoes an extensive review and peer review before publication to ensure it meets accessibility standards.

We are also reviewing the use of third-party tools that don’t meet accessibility standards with the view to moving towards providers that can offer enhanced accessibility.

We are also committing to resolving issues with the site’s accessibility by the end of 2020.

We are working towards full level AA compliance.
Preparation of this accessibility statement

This statement was prepared on the 21^st of September 2020. It was last reviewed on the 21^st of September 2020.

This website was last tested on the 21^st of September. The test was carried out internally by the Student Engagement and Communications Team within Student Services at the University of Hull.

To test the site, we selected a random sample of pages from the site, and made sure to review pages with third-party tools separately.
