The University of Hull will host the Allam British Open

The University of Hull will host the Allam British Open, one of the world’s most prestigious squash championships from the 18-26 May 2019.

Dr Assem Allam, long-time sponsor of the tournament, announced the deal at the University’s new sports centre, The Beacon, on Tuesday. It is the first time the University will host the entire tournament, having been the venue for qualifying and round one matches in the past.

Assem said: “I am very happy to continue to support the Allam British Open and extend my backing of this great tournament. The British Open is a national treasure, and it is fantastic that we are continuing to build on the legacy of staging the event completely at the new sport development at the University of Hull campus and inspiring new generations to become involved with the sport in the region. I hope that we can attract many young students to discover squash for the first time in 2019 and look forward to working together with England Squash, the Professional Squash Association and the University of Hull to develop the sport in the region in the years to come.”

The Allam British Open is the oldest and most established tournament in squash. With a prize fund of £125,000 for each of the male and female winners, it is widely considered to be one of the two most prestigious tournaments in the game, often referred to as the “Wimbledon of squash”.

Steve Curtis, Partnership and Project Manager (Sport), said: “We are a university which is passionate about sport and this announcement is fantastic news. Our ambition is to be able to provide the setting to host world tournaments like this and our new facilities will provide an amazing location. We look forward to welcoming spectators from across the globe to witness what is sure to be a thrilling tournament.

“We hope the event can inspire the region to pick up a racket and give squash a go, we will be working in local schools to provide opportunities to try squash and to attend the championships on campus.”

University of Hull Colour Run

The University of Hull Sport Development team are proud to announce their annual colour run in partnership with Guide Dogs!

On Saturday the 13th October we will be hosting a colour run down at the Lawns Centre for student’s staff and members of the community. This event is open to all ages and accommodates for children who are accompanied by adults! This is event is perfect fun for the family and promises not to disappoint. This event follows the footsteps of last year’s record number of participants – 250, which was shortlisted for an award at the Yorkshire university sports awards! Working together with Guide Dogs will help us raise the awareness of the event and the work of fantastic charity, so expect lots of doggy filled treats in there as well

To start lots of runners start the day in a white t-shirt, getting covered from head to toe in a rainbow of colours at each kilometre of the course. Oh, and did we mention you don’t even have to run? You can choose to walk, skip or dance your way around if you feel like it. It’s all about the fun and what gives you the biggest smiles. Come and join the Colour Run for an event that you definitely will not forget!

Distance: 3k – three laps around the outskirts of the Lawns Centre, however, you don’t have to run, you can walk, dance or jog, it’s entirely up to you! Alternatively, if you’re feeling adventurous and want to do run more than 3 laps on the day, that is also allowed.

A small message from Guide Dogs – Every hour in the UK, someone loses their sight. There are almost two million people in the UK currently living with sight loss. By 2050, this number is predicted to double.

Guide Dogs aim is simple: We want people who are blind and partially sighted to enjoy the same freedom of movement as everyone else. We work with people of all ages, from all different backgrounds; from parents with babies who have just been diagnosed with sight loss to people in their 80s and 90s. Our services help people to do the simple things that sighted people often take for granted, like travelling to work or school, popping out for groceries or meeting up with friends.

A partnership with the University of Hull for this year’s colour run event will help us to raise awareness of our life-changing services and help us reach those who need our help.

University to welcome over 1600 runners to campus for Hull Half Marathon

hull half marathon

This Sunday, runners taking part in the inaugural Asda Foundation Hull Half Marathon will be making their way through campus as the University is an ‘official venue partner’ for the run.

This is a really exciting event and colleagues are encouraged to get involved by supporting the 1600 runners visiting our beautiful campus, including over 40 of our colleagues who will proudly be representing the University in vibrant t-shirts.

In addition to the race, there will be live music, food, family games including giant inflatable Jenga and a football table on the plaza outside of the Brynmor Jones Library, making it a fun day out for friends and family too. Spectators should come to campus at least 15 minutes before they expect their friend/family member to reach mile eight, in order to ensure they get a good view – we expect the first runners to come through at 9.45am.

Colleagues and students from the Faculty of Health Sciences will also be representing the University and providing massages to runners at the finish line in a branded tent, providing another fantastic opportunity to raise awareness of the University.

Spectators can enter the campus via the north west entrance on Inglemire Lane circled on the map here. All visitors will need to park on the temporary car park located on the cricket pitch.

Road closures surrounding the University are shown with the purple line on the map, but the full list of road closures can be found here.
